Will Lime Lay?

We got our first eggs! They are small and brown so far. Some of the chickens, the Araucana, (named after a Chillian tribe where they were domesticated) will lay blue and green colored eggs. Lime the duck now believes she/he is a chicken. We are waiting to see if Lime will lay eggs too. When they are in the yard, Lime swims in the small plastic pool and the chickens hang right around.

The chickens also began their pecking order and the one chicken that gets singled out, Sasha, just takes it. It is very strange. They will develop a very advanced hiearchy. An old wives tale states that vics vapor rub will stop the pecking. One taste and everyone will stop. We have tried it 3 nights in a row and it seems to be working.

Yes the story of lime is sorta sad. My husbands boss's daughter got 2 ducks for easter. They actually had dye injected into their shells and were born bright yellow (lemon) and bright green (lime). well a couple of months later and lemon who had lots of problems already was eaten by a racoon the night before a big vacation. Hence we came to have lime stay at our place. He/she adapted immediately and seems to like it here just fine. She and one other chicken, bena seem to clean each other!

Humans have a lot to learn from animals, though most of us think we are evolved!

Terrific! Did you say blue and green eggs? Now that must be fascinating.

just yesterday a co-worker went out to a farm to photograph blue and green eggs as a practice exercise for her developing skills. They had none that day -

I on the other hand am thankful when pecking orders are well established, at least with dogs. Does this happen with chickens or is it rather a never ending process? with the intervention of vicks, of course.

lovely photo - lime fits right in...

Your post made me laugh and remember a time, that seems so long ago, when we had ducks and chickens in our backyard.

Once pecking order is established it should calm down some. But vicks did the trick.
