Chicken fanatics

I am not the only chicken lover. Come to find out there is a resurgence in urban chicken owners. Perhaps the idea of $3.50 a dozen for organic free range eggs is too much. Chickens are really a lot of fun to have around. I am surprised by it and joke to my husband about chicken TV being better.
  • Urban Chicken Underground
  • She is creating a movement.

The Midwest is experiencing a resurgence in urban chicken pet owners and people are trying to change city ordinances across the US to allow pet chickens. Backyard Poultry went defunct in the 1980's and now boasts of over 50,000 in readership. Articles are everywhere like this one:
  • Man's New Best Friend
  • Now let me clarify, you do not need a roster to have eggs so this is just the quiet girls that people want to have in their backyards and voila eggs! Howver Urban Chicken has a great point that they are not louder than dogs!

This is a shot of Greta she is my fav.

If I could keep chickens here, I would. By the way, organic free-range local eggs are over 4 dollars a dozen at our local organic market!

Heat index here is 104; and today an older woman in the post office scoffed at the notion of global warming. Guess her husband made all his money pumping CO2 into the atmosphere . . .

Thanks for the link! I am getting together kids in the neighborhood to help paint an Urban Chicken Underground mural on my garage. The kids love the idea of neighborhood chickens!

Lovely site! I didn't see the book "The Egg and I" on your book list. Not particularly chicken-loving, but a great, funny read. Thought you might enjoy it.

But why is there something that seems funny about chickens? How have they earned their comic reputation?

Is it simply the word "chicken" that has a funny sound? They aren't taken seriously...

I, like many human beings, have never personally known a chicken which is probably a big part of the comic chicken conundrum, as it were...

Yours truly, I will check the book out--thank you.

    Paul,

They are quite funny once you get to know them. So their reputation is not false.

I think in my visit to your post, I forgot to mention how I got here! I have a Brahman rooster named Silver who is my love, but ... no one else's. If you get my meaning! :) With me, he's a sweetie ...big, gorgeous and bold as can be.

    Have a great day.

My neighbor has a couple of chickens, too funny in suburbia. They wake me up every morning if my windows are open, noisy shits.

How is it like to have real live chickens around? The only chickens I see are dead, smothered in batter or sauces and ready for my mouth.

What a cool idea! I hope it gains popularity. I'm all about making more use of the space we have in cities.

I was just reading yesterday about how chickens in factory farms are packed so thick they can't extend their wings and they become atrophied and have poor health due to high ammonia levels but free range chickens are much happier. Americans eat more chickens than all other livestock combined!!! Why shouldn't chickens be allowed in the city? My friend had 5 chickens that lived out of an old car in her backyard. They would go in and out and strut around her backyard clucking. They were even better than well trained dogs!
