My bat talking days are numbered. I am on tonight but the crowds have dropped--around 200 now. There are still over 400,000 bats in the cave and the flights are thick and good. Soon, most of our bats will head to Mexico for the winter. But not all bats do. Many hang around year round.
Here is a picture of some bats in deep hibernation. The breathing of a hibernating bat is imperceptible, and its body cold to touch. Its heartbeat drops from roughly 400 beats per minute, when awake, to about 25 in hibernation, and its body temperature drops to within a few tenths of one degree of the surrounding cave.
This is a Tirdent Leaf Nose Bat. I think it is cute.

Fascinating! They're cute little mammals. I don't know why anyone would fear them. I'm trying to learn how to sleep like that.

Always learn something new when I read your posts on bats. Never knew they hibernated.
All relatively new to me. You learn something everyday. Thanks for this.
