Lets Make A Global Classroom

I have a great friend who has just completed and gained his first teaching position at the Roosevelt Elementary School just outside of Albuquerque, NM.  The school serves children from Bernalillo, surrounding communities, and neighboring pueblos.
His name is Michael Chavez. I met him while leading cave tours at
He is a great guy and I think these kids are lucky to have him.
Now with his first own classroom, he has to decorate it.  He told me today, that he is  wants to make it really sweet for the kids!  I had an idea.

I want as many people as possible to send posters, or other creative stuff that
2nd grade kids (7 years old) would like .
This is a great chance to help a new teacher and make this classroom filled
with creative things!

Michael Chavez
201 Pinnacle Drive
Apt #3622
Rio Rancho, NM 87124

Postcards, puzzles, pictures of animals, anything you make, crafts, vintage, from a garage sale, just something fun.
It does not need to be new!
If you send something please leave a note here.  School starts August 11th.
I will have him take pictures of his room before and after
and lets see what we can create!

What a great idea, and how cool of you to post this and help him out. I'll try to think of something that I can send. Also, I got your comment about the purple fabric and I do have some in stock - I just updated my patterns page. :)

Lol, I think his mailbox gonna be swamped. Why not he decorates half his classroom with items sent to him, and the other half with his children's inputs? Could be a fun class with them unleashing their creativity, plus they will be involved, and it will be more the more meaningful.

Congrats to him!!

Well done Michal, what a marvellous time your going to have. I have just thrown away all my project work, knowing I will be unable to teach again. The children I taught were autistic, we created some awesome projects. I truly feel his best designers will be the children. I am going on a hen party Saturday morning, to learn how to look after my chucks and the omlet, wish me luck...

What an inspiring idea!,,,a real selfless act of "paying it forward". Michael is truly blessed to have you as a friend.

I've been retired for 12 years. For many of my teaching years, I spent in Special Education at the primary level with Learning Disabled children. There were isolated cases of emotionally disturbed and autistic children. I was truly blessed by having the experience of teaching and loving these children.

I'm anxious to see the results of Michael's "global classroom". I'll keep checking for his progress.

You live in a beautiful part of the U.S. Thanks for your visit to my blog and leaving your kind comment. Come back!

Thanks for stopping by my blog today. Unfortunately the quilt went to someone else, but it was worth a try.

I love the idea of helping this new teacher. I've started a classroom from scratch 2 times and it's a lot of work.

If I get a chance I will try to send something to help out.

Pecos Blue: I couldn't find an e-mail contact on your profile, so I'm using your comment section!

I have pictures printed (8X10) and ready to send to Michael. But I need to write a letter to explain them. I'll get it all in the mail by Monday, August 28.

Such a neat idea!!! Thanks...

As a teacher myself I think this is a great idea! How cool to decorate a classroom with things sent from all over the country.

Good for him. I worked in the public elementary schools for 23 years - loved it. I had very few male colleagues. For kids that age, I think it's good for them developmentally to have more of a male/female balance in their school environment, especially since so many of them don't have their fathers at home.

Hiya Pecos,
Ok, I'll see what I can do, not a very good crafts person myself. If he doesn't mind, he could use my photos as well.
(posted this at my site, repeating here in case you din see this)

Oh, has he got a blog or an email add that I can send some photos over? Not too sure how the resolution of my printer is.

I sent my box out last week. It contained a kite to hang in room, big reading pillows, bunch of spare pens/pencils, used storybooks, plant labelling chart, a watercolor picture and letter from us.

As a former elem. teacher, I remember the daunting task of trying to decorate my room. I got returned paint from Home Depot and spent hours painting the walls. I wish every new teacher had an angel like Erin to help.

Ideas for what you might send: art supplies, laminated posters, mobiles, plants, books, pillows, folding chairs, puzzles, rulers, calendars.....teachers love anything. Even used stuff!

Yeah for education! Esp. public education.

Thanks for doing this Erin. I really enjoyed taking part. And look forward to pics of his room.
